Saturday, August 17, 2019 Chaco Canyon: Hungo Pavi

Can you find Hungo Pavi on this map? Follow the 18 mile canyon loop with me. I started at the campground, went to the Visitor Center, Una Vida and the petroglyphs and then to Hungo Pavi.

Many of the dwellings at Chaco Canyon are spread out along an eighteen mile loop in the canyon. Each site has unique features.

The buildings at Hungo Pavi, and many of the other sites,  are about the same color as the rocky cliffs behind them. Can you see the buildings in this photograph?
This wall is the unique feature of Hungo Pavi.
I counted my steps from its beginning to its end:
154 steps!
In the wall are rectangular and circular openings. The rectangular openings are considered to be windows or doors. The purpose of the circular openings is thought to be for tree trunks that held up the ceilings in the dwellings.

These dwellings are so well preserved because they are located in the desert. The dry air, and lack of water, keep the stone and wood from rotting. Scientists can date the dwellings using samples of wood in the walls. Scientists think the Hungo Pavi dwellings were built over a period of time between the years 800 and 1100.
