Monday, August 19, 2019 Chaco Canyon: Hike to Pueblo Alto

Can you find the dotted line marking the trail to the Pueblo Alto Complex? The following photographs were taken from the trail.
See the moon over the mesa?
Hikers have to "register" before hiking the trails because  of the extreme heat. Hikers have to put part of the registration paper on the dashboard of their vehicle to let the park rangers know they are on the trail.
Kin Kletso is on the trail before it rises to the top of the mesa.

Starting up the trail.
Keep hiking up!

A view from the top.

This is a fossil "shrimp burrow" in the sandstone on the top of the mesa from a time when this whole area was a shallow ocean.

Many lizards live in this environment. This lizard was about 6 inches long.

The trail and the clouds!

The Chacoan Roads were designed to support trade routes from every direction. Macaw feathers were traded from Mexico. Quartz was traded from the mountains hundreds of miles away.

Looking out towards Chaco Canyon.
I saw more lizards than people on the hike to Pueblo Alto!
Back down to Kin Kletso.
