10/13 Death Valley - Badwater Basin

Death Valley National Park is 5,292 square miles in size. 1,678,660 visitors entered the park in 2018! Badwater Basin is the place in the park that most visitors stop to see. It has the lowest elevation of any place in the United States! As the sign says, it is 282 feet BELOW sea level!

This is what Badwater Basin looks like from above. The water you can see is very shallow, hot and full of salt and other chemicals. Amazingly, some plants, aquatic insects and the Badwater Snail can live in the water!  When the water evaporates, it leaves a white crust of salt and other chemicals on the land.
The salt and other chemicals form crystals when the water evaporates.

The crust is hard enough for people to walk on it in some places.

In other places, the crystals are delicate and fragile and take hundreds of years to form, so walking on that crust is discouraged.

Do you see the white rectangular sign on the cliff? It reads, "Sea Level," so that sign is 282 feet above Badwater Basin!
