11/1 Red Rock Canyon

I took a different route from Ash Meadows to my brother and his wife's house in Henderson, Nevada so I could explore Red Rock Canyon.
Red Rock Canyon is northwest of Las Vegas. It's a wilderness area about 195,000 acres in size!

There is a scenic 13 mile one-way road through Red Rock Canyon. People also enjoy hiking, camping, biking, rock climbing and horseback riding in the canyon.

The sandstone rocks in the canyon were sand dunes more than 180 - 190 million years ago! The red color comes from iron in the rocks.
Red Rock canyon is in the Mojave Desert.

I drove the scenic route through the canyon.

The layers in the cliff face reveal the how the sand dunes developed and were eroded by the wind.

I wished that I would have had time to hike some of the trails in the canyon.

Just like at Ash Meadows, the presence of a green beltway suggests water below the surface.

The people give you an idea of the size of the rocky cliffs.

Do you see the people climbing on the cliff in the lower right hand side of the photograph?

The temperature was in the 70s and there was no wind.

Looking south reveals a haze hovering over Las Vegas.

Before arriving at Ash Meadows, I didn't think there were many natural areas in the vicinity of Las Vegas, but now I know there are more places than I can visit in my three months here!
