Sunday, September 1, 2019 Ash Meadows: Crystal Springs Boardwalk

I moved my trailer to a shady spot under the mesquite trees. It's a lot better than the site I had in the sun. The afternoon temperatures range from 103 - 109 degrees, so I really appreciate the shade!
The front of the visitor center at Ash Meadows.
This gigantic stone lizard sits next to the entrance of the visitor center! I've seen a lot of his living relatives!

The hike to Crystal Springs starts at the back of the Visitor Center.

The hike is on this boardwalk.  At first it seemed kind of strange to me to have a boardwalk because the ground is hard and crusty, but then I learned that the plants are fragile and some of them are endangered so the boardwalk is necessary to keep the plants safe.

There is artwork on the boardwalk. This is a representation of the pupfish which is an endangered fish that lives in some of the springs at Ash meadows. It's only one, or two, inches long.

Coming from the midwest, the plants here seem to all look the same: yellow and gray and bushy, but the signs along the boardwalk tell a different story, so I took a picture of them so you can learn about this place with me.

Crystal Spring. It's about 10 feet in circumference and 15 feet deep!

This is why going swimming, or kayaking, in Crystal Reservoir doesn't really cool me off!

You can see the blue a little better here.

I was surprised to learn that hummingbirds migrate through Ash Meadows!
